A Guide To Double Eyelid Surgery

There are many Asian people who want to create a crease in their upper eyelid. This can be done with the help of a double eyelid surgery, which consists of a single suture, or tissue excision and liposuction. Some people however need double eyelid surgery as the excess fat, muscle or skin causes the obstruction in their vision. If patients are able to prove the functional need for this surgery, the cost of entire procedure is paid for through the insurance.

The Double Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Before the surgery, the surgeon meets the patients to discuss the plan, and expectations from double eyelid surgery. The position of eyelid crease and eyebrow height determine the outcome of this surgery, and it is important to take careful measurements

During the double eyelid surgery, an incision is made, and excess skin, fat and muscles are removed. Most of the procedures use laser to remove the tissues. Surgeon uses fine sutures to close the incision, and these sutures are placed on eyelid folds so that the scars are not visible. There is certain amount of bruising and swelling after the surgery, but these side-effects can be reduced with the help of cold compresses. Some patients also feel the sticky or dry eyes, so are prescribed eye ointment or drops.

Double eyelid surgery is a cosmetic procedure, but sometimes improves the vision, as the obstruction is removed.

After Double Eyelid Surgery Procedure

Get as much rest as possible at least for two days, on a comfortable bed or a recliner. No bandage is put over the eyes. Watching television is alright, but try not to strain too much. To prevent swelling, use cold compresses to the eyelids. Clean towel or gauze pads soaked in the cold water can be applied directly.

After double eyelid surgery, the pain is usually mild, and any pain killer medicine is prescribed. Report the severe pain, and avoid taking ibuprofen and aspirin. After the surgery, the eyelids become swollen, bruised and red, and there might be the bloody fluid from the wound.

The eyelid creases will look too deep, too high, asymmetrical and overly rounded till the swelling subsides, and deep tissues get the time to soften. Apply the antibiotic ointment or drops to the stitches before going to bed.

The incision may feel tender for few months after cosmetic eyelid surgery. First 3-4 days are worst, and after that, improvement begins slowly. However, full healing can take almost 12-18 months or more. It is important to keep your expectations realistic, and follow the instructions of your doctor diligently.
