To learn what causes strabismus, it is necessary to know about the different forms of strabismus. Essentially the strabismus causes may be because of issues in the eye muscles power like paralysis or unequal pulling of muscles on one side of the eye, or because of a brain problem that hinders the coordination of the eyes.
First, it is still unknown what causes strabismus in children. However, there has been evidence that it is a hereditary condition as it has been observed to run in families. As a result, someone whose family have a known record of strabismus among members have an increased possibility of having an offspring with the condition as well.
One more possible strabismus causes is that it is probably a coping mechanism of the eye for another eye condition like farsightedness. Far sighted individuals are not able to correctly perceive near objects which makes the eyes turn inwards.
Intermittent strabismus is a kind of strabismus wherein the eye does not turn constantly, as it only does during stressful situations or because of sickness. The strabismus causes for this kind of condition is a vision issue called convergence insufficiency. It is an ordinary condition that may also cause headaches, double vision, blurred vision, and eyestrain.
Meanwhile, adults may have strabismus because of eye or blood vessel damage. This may be a result of other conditions like blindness, Graves’ disease, stroke, cataract, and other muscle and nerve disorders. Blindness usually makes the eye gradually turn outward and be a reason for strabismus, no matter what caused the loss of vision. Diabetes could also cause strabismus among individuals. This is due to the lessened blood supply to the eye muscles, leading to the squinting of the eyes.
Additionally, some neurological conditions can also become strabismus causes. Examples of this are brain tumors, premature birth, Down’s syndrome, hydrocephalus, and Cerebral Palsy. In addition, acquired or adult strabismus may also be a result of untreated or unsuccessfully treated childhood strabismus.
